Callaway Golf is introduced to Schools
The lifeblood of any sport is youth. With that in mind, Callaway Golf and the Golf Association of Ontario have teamed up to bring a unique program to two local schools.
Callaway Golf in Schools aims to expose the game to elementary students in hopes they will take up the sport.
The program started in September 2007 with a goal of reaching 100 schools and more than 15,000 students.
Today, CPGA professional Derek McCurdy will be presenting the program of Callaway Golf to Grade 3-8 students at Couchiching Heights Public School. On Thursday, he will be at East Oro Public School.
"The Callaway Golf in Schools program is one of the most exciting initiatives we have been involved in recent years," said Dave Mills, executive director of the Golf Association of Ontario. "The program has the potential to introduce large numbers of young men and women to the game of golf, through a program of Callaway Golf that is tailored to their age and is focused on having fun."
The program has been designed in a four-part process leading to students actually going to a golf course.
Students from junior kindergarten to Grade 4 will experience an introduction to Callaway Golf from "Mr. Knickers and Friends" during the initial stage of the program.
In this presentation, children interact with characters developed specifically for the program.
The second stage, "Stick to Golf," is designed to further develop the culture of the Callaway golf, with programming focused on developing basic golf skills for Grades 4-6.
The third stage consists of a "School Cruiser Clinic," geared for Grades 6-8. This is an introduction to the full golf swing in an outdoor setting.
The final step in the Callaway golf program is "Green Grass Field Trips." These half-day trips to a local golf course ensure the students have an actual on-course experience.
